WASTEWATER

With innovative solutions we want to support a sustainable development of municipial and industrial wastewater treatment. Therefore, we offer consulting services for public and industrial or commercial operators of wastewater treatment plants to help with process optimisation and the improvement of wastewater treatment plants. We also develop new processes for wastewater treatment together with industrial partners, especially to minimise energy use and to recover resources from wastewater. We also offer consulting and research services for sludge treatment. The knowledge and experience from domestic projects help us for our transfer projects with partners in developing and emerging countries.

 

MUNICIPIAL WASTEWATER TREATMENT

In municipial wastewater treatment we focus on technical advice and support for wastewater treatment plant operators and on the development of new processes to optimise energy use. For example, advanced biofilm reactors have been tested in pilot plants in the last years to minimise the energy use for oxygen input of the aerobic stage. We also develop concepts to make trickling filter plants work better for denitrification and we support the use of anaerobic reactors, especially in warmer climates.

 

INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATER TREATMENT

In industrial wastewater treatment, the focus has been on consulting services for the paper industry. Relevant issues are, to avoid operational disturbances in anaerobic reactors and to improve the water cycle management. We also work on the control of problems with calcium and the anaerobic treatment of concentrated wastewater from the paper industry. In R & D projects (research and development projects) and in consulting projects textile wastewater treatment is getting more important. Especially the operation and optimisation of treatment plants as well as testing of new processes in partial streams are reviewed.

 

TRACE SUBSTANCES

Trace substances in the inflow of municipal wastewater treatment plants come from households, industrial operations and from effluents of so-called chemical-physical pretreatment plants. Here the FiW sees the opportunity for a very effective elimination of trace substances before they enter the public wastewater system. Therefore, the FiW is analysing emissions from chemical-physical treatment plants and develops ideas to reduce these emissions. All of this is part of a project funded by the Federal Environment Agency. At many places, the elimination of trace substances in concentrated partial streams seems to be better than a general 3rd treatment step at the municipal wastewater treatment plant.

 

WATER REUSE

Water reuse is a topic in international cooperation. But it is also discussed for energy crop production, recultivation measures and agricultural irrigation. For example, in the BMBF project awaregio a modular pilot plant with a fish and plant breeding was developed, built and tested under practical conditions at a german treatment plant. The transfer to semi-arid regions in Tunisia is now being realised in the project WaterReTUNe. It is planned to analyse the acceptance and the readiness for the market of new methods and to apply them in Germany.

 

AGRICULTURE

So far, apart from slurry, only a few studies and experiences are available for the treatment of wastewater from agriculture. Most times agricultural wastewater comes from diffuse sources and is often responsible for the pollution of surface water and near-surface groundwater in regions with a lot of agriculture. This is why we see the need, and the potential at many farms, to achieve significant emission reductions. This can be achieved by the development and distribution of adapted management and treatment concepts.

 

PHOSPHORUS

In Germany, the regulations for the treatment of sewage sludge were renewed in 2017. The new regulation now sets priorities about the recovery of phosphorus, which is a limited resource on the planet. The FiW helps operators and municipalities on the development of sustainable sewage sludge concepts In the future, it will also be a matter of using other resources in wastewater, such as wastewater heat, but also nitrogen, which has been largely removed up to now but can no longer be used as fertiliser. The recovery of resources is getting more important in the industrial sector. It is supported by newer and cheaper technologies - especially membrane separation processes. That is why in the long term an increasing potential is seen to change the sewage sludge into usable products that have a lot of phosphorus, nitrogen and carbon.
