On 19 February 2026, a workshop of the joint project AquaRevier took place in FiW e. V.’s historic oil mill at RWTH Aachen University. In addition to the project consortium, further technical colleagues from the partner institutions participated and contributed additional expertise to the discussions. The aim of the working meeting was to jointly develop and align practical measures, methods and transfer pathways for the case studies. The project is coordinated by FiW e. V. at RWTH Aachen University. AquaRevier is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) under the STARK funding programme; the project executing agency is BAFA. The State of North Rhine–Westphalia contributes through co-financing.
Within AquaRevier, research institutions, municipalities and the water sector are jointly developing strategies for a future-proof, climate-resilient water management system in the Rhenish mining area (Rheinisches Revier). Against the backdrop of structural change and increasingly frequent extreme weather events, the project focuses on reconciling competing water uses and rapidly translating practical solutions into application.
Accordingly, the workshop at the oil mill focused on substantive work. In moderated working groups, short impulse inputs and interactive formats, practical requirements were refined, interfaces between the case studies were identified, and upcoming milestones were specified.
The exchange of additional technical perspectives—from data and modelling questions through to implementation aspects in municipalities, industry and agriculture—enabled key topics to be explored in greater depth and the next steps to be aligned on a sound basis. The results will feed directly into the ongoing case studies and into the planned toolbox for actors in the water sector.
