BioMeSyn workshop: Market prospects for renewable methanol

In-person workshop at the DBFZ in Leipzig

On 14 April 2026, the BioMeSyn consortium, led by the German Biomass Research Centre (DBFZ) in Leipzig, organised a stakeholder workshop on the topic of ‘Value creation with impact: market prospects for renewable methanol’. Around 50 participants from the fields of research, industry, politics and practice discussed the economic and regulatory conditions under which renewable methanol produced from biogenic sources can enter the market. The BioMeSyn collaborative project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) as part of the “Industrial Bioeconomy” funding programme; the project is supervised by the VDI Technology Centre.

The transformation of the energy and industrial systems presents new challenges for research, industry and politics alike: technological innovations must converge with viable business models and suitable regulatory frameworks. It is precisely at this interface that the workshop comes into play, organised by the DBFZ in the lead role together with the project partners FiW e.V., BtX energy, OWI Science for Fuels, Warmser Bioenergie and AgroEnergie Bierde as the BioMeSyn consortium.

BioMeSyn scales up an innovative, electricity-integrated process for methanol synthesis based on biogenic carbon sources (CO₂ from biogas plants) – developed in previous FiW research projects – to a practical application scale for medium-sized biogas plant operators. The aim is to combine renewable energies and biogenic residues into a market-ready process that can contribute to the decarbonisation of energy-intensive industries.

Around 50 participants from the fields of research, industry, politics and practice discussed the potential of decentralised methanol plants and their role in future energy systems. Key influencing factors, regulatory hurdles and concrete options for action regarding the market introduction of renewable methanol were identified. The results of the discussions will be summarised in a position paper addressed to political and economic decision-makers.

A particular highlight was the guided tour of the Pilot-SBG at the DBFZ site – a direct insight into practical operations that made the day’s discussions even more tangible. Find out more about the plant at www.dbfz.de/pilot-sbg

The DBFZ working group ‘Biomass in the Energy System’ will now systematically evaluate and classify the key contributions and discussion outcomes. Based on this, a position paper will be produced that brings together recommendations for action for policy, business and research. Further information on the activities of the ‘Biomass in the Energy System’ working group can be found at www.dbfz.de/arbeitsgruppe-biomasse-im-energiesystem

One thing is certain: the debate on renewable methanol as a building block of the energy transition has received a new, strong impetus at the DBFZ in Leipzig.
