Girl’s Day at the Research Institute for Water Management and Climate Future at RWTH Aachen e.V.
On April 23, the annual Girls' Day took place once again under the theme “Dive into the World of Drinking Water and Wastewater”
This year's Girls'Day 2026 saw us open our doors to four curious students from the Aachen region, giving them an authentic glimpse into the everyday working life of female engineers in the water management sector.
Our goal: to show how diverse, meaningful, and exciting a career in drinking water and wastewater management can be – and to spark the girls' interest in technical professions.
The day kicked off with a thematic introduction by colleagues from various departments at FiW. Questions like "What happens to water before it comes out of the tap?" or "Where does the water go after I take a shower?" were answered in an engaging and accessible way. There were also fascinating insights into climate adaptation measures and their growing importance for water management. Things then got hands-on: the participants built their own water filters from natural materials – experiencing engineering with their own hands!
The highlight of the day was a guided tour of the Stolberg wastewater treatment plant. Thanks to the kind support of WVER, we were able to explore municipal wastewater treatment up close, discovering all its stages and getting a behind-the-scenes look at how it all works.
A heartfelt thank-you goes to WVER – especially to Mr. Ernst – for the informative and inspiring tour. And of course to all four participants for their curiosity, enthusiasm, and great questions!
We're already looking forward to Girls'Day 2027!
