FiW Presents Findings on Low Water Levels on the Rhine at the JRF-WissensLunch
Focus on the Impact on Inland Waterway Transport and the Economy
Periods of low water on the Rhine affect inland waterway transport and numerous economic sectors that depend on it. As part of the Johannes-Rau-Forschungsgemeinschaft (JRF) WissensLunch on May 29, 2026, Dr.-Ing. Mark Braun presented the latest research findings from his dissertation. The online event was aimed at interested members of the public as well as representatives from academia, industry, and government. It focused on the effects of climate change on flow conditions in the Rhine, potential adaptation strategies, and the economic consequences of low-water events.
Low water levels can significantly limit the transport capacity of inland waterway vessels. Businesses along the Rhine rely on the waterway as a key transport corridor. Restrictions on shipping therefore not only affect logistics but can also impact production processes and supply chains.
In his presentation, Mark Braun demonstrated how future runoff patterns might change under various climate scenarios. He also explained the adaptation options available to the shipping industry and other affected economic sectors. Another key focus was on estimating the economic damage that can result from low water levels.
