Successful Kick-off of NEWA2 in Lima

On September 25, 2025, the project NEWA2 was officially launched in Lima, Peru. The project develops innovative solutions for safe water reuse and managed aquifer recharge (MAR) to strengthen the climate resilience of water supply in arid metropolitan regions. FiW e. V. was represented at the event by Dr.-Ing. Manuel Krauss and Evelyn Mathyl (M.Sc.). NEWA2 is coordinated by ZIRIUS, University of Stuttgart, funded by the BMUV under the Environmental Protection Export Initiative, and managed by ZUG gGmbH.

A central highlight of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Ing. Christian D. León (ZIRIUS, University of Stuttgart, Project Coordinator) and Ing. Julio Cesar De la Rocha (General Manager of SEDAPAL). We were also honored to welcome Ing. Julio Cesar Kosaka Harima (Chairman of the Board of SEDAPAL).

The event brought together German and Peruvian partners. In addition to the consortium consisting of TZW: DVGW Technology Center Water, University of Stuttgart, FiW e. V., Sedapal and Boreal Light GmbH, numerous institutions participated, including the German-Peruvian Chamber of Commerce (AHK Peru), GIZ ConoSur, the World Bank, the Peruvian National Water Authority (ANA), Aquafondo, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina.

Following the kick-off, the first working meetings with Sedapal, University of Stuttgart, FiW and TZW were held to jointly identify a suitable site for the planned pilot plant. In addition, expert interviews with Sedapal provided valuable insights and recommendations on the operation of pond systems in the context of water reuse.
