R2K-Klim+ at the Climate Adaption Week

As part of the Climate Adaptation Week, FiW presented the status quo of the current R2K-Klim+ project to participants from research, urban planning and climate management.

Climate change and extreme weather events are threatening our livelihoods. But how can we better protect people and infrastructure in our cities? At this year's Climate Adaptation Week, René Kremer and Mark Braun presented the BMBF-funded R2K-Klim+ project with the main aim of developing a strategic decision support tool for climate adaptation at regional and municipal level. Find out more about the event and the inspiring exchange between experts from research and urban planning.

The increasing challenges posed by climate change and extreme weather events are threatening our ecosystems and human livelihoods. In order to meet these changes in a future-oriented manner, we need to make our infrastructures more resilient and implement sustainable land use concepts. Only through targeted adaptation measures can we mitigate the effects of climate change and set the course for a safe and liveable future.

In this context, the Centre for Climate Adaptation is organizing the Climate Adaptation Week for the third year in a row. Numerous stakeholders are organizing information events, interactive workshops, creative activities such as tree donations and other practical initiatives to actively contribute to climate adaptation. This year's week took place from September 16 to 20, 2024 and included over 300 events across Germany on a wide range of topics that appealed to different target groups.

The Research Institute for Water Management and Climate Future at RWTH Aachen University (FiW) e.V. also contributed to the week with innovative approaches. On September 17, 2024, René Kremer and Mark Braun presented insights into the current state of research of the BMBF project R2K-Klim+. The main objective of the project is to develop a strategic decision support tool for adapting to climate change at regional and municipal level in the Rhine catchment area.

At the beginning of the event, methodological approaches for the integrated assessment of climate impacts and adaptation measures for urban areas were presented. The focus was on a dynamic and constructive dialogue in which participants from research, urban planning and climate management were invited to contribute their ideas and knowledge on various issues from the project, thus contributing to the optimization of the assessment methodology. This inspiring dialog made it possible to critically reflect on current challenges and, at the same time, to explore ways forward for existing approaches.
