R2K-Klim+ workshop at the Climate Management Conference
Potential uses of climate services for public administration – examples from RegI-Klim
Two employees from the BMBF funded R2K-Klim+ project took part in the Extreme Weather Congress and the Climate Management Conference in Hamburg from 25.–27.09.24 and presented the climate service “KLAUS” (Climate Adaptation in Urban Systems) as part of a workshop offered together with GERICS. The aim of the workshop was to present two climate services from the BMBF funding measure RegIKlim to climate managers and other potential users and to discuss their potential for municipal climate change adaptation.
The Extreme Weather Congress is the leading interdisciplinary conference on extreme weather in Germany and was held jointly with the Climate Management Conference for the first time this year. In numerous interdisciplinary lectures, the latest scientific research findings on the global rise in mean air and water temperatures and global changes in precipitation were presented and their effects and questions on the implementation of climate protection and adaptation measures were discussed in over 40 workshops.
On Friday afternoon, Thurid Roth and Mark Braun (FiW e. V.) took part in a workshop offered by GERICS on the potential uses of climate services for public administration. After a brief overview of the RegIKlim funding measure, various climate projections from NUKLEUS were explained and two examples of climate services from RegIKlim were presented: the regional climate information system ReKIS KOMMUNAL from the KlimaKonform project and, on the FiW side, the web-based decision support system “KLAUS” from the BMBF project R2K-Klim+. KLAUS enables the city of Duisburg to assess the effects of flooding, heavy rainfall and heat and take them into account in urban planning, for example by identifying potential areas for adaptation measures. The current version of the web tool can be viewed here. Several climate adaptation managers took part in the event and engaged in a lively discussion about the potential uses of the climate services presented.
