The flood disaster in July 2021 in the Ahr Valley prompted the water management authorities and municipalities in Rhineland-Palatinate (RLP) to jointly strengthen regional flood prevention measures. In addition to technical flood protection measures, flood-adapted waterway maintenance and development also became a central component of resilient flood risk management. Against this backdrop, the district of Ahrweiler and its independent towns, municipalities, and associations of municipalities took the fundamental decision to establish the Gewässerzweckverband LK Ahrweiler (GZV) water management association. The FiW accompanied this process together with the Gemeinde- und Städtebund RLP (GStB) on behalf of the MKUEM and developed the financing system for the association.
