Practical, research-based tools and measures for nationwide wastewater-based epidemiology
WBEready – Wastewater based epidemiology and preparedness: reserach need for a roadmap to develop adaptive monitoring capacities in the public health service
The overarching goal of the joint project WBEready was to develop the necessary concepts for the establishment of a future-oriented ‘wastewater-based epidemiology’ (WBE) with adaptive monitoring capacities in the Public Health Service (ÖGD). For this purpose, an existing screening of SARS-CoV-2 was expanded to include numerous other pathogens including circulating and newly emerging human pathogenic viruses as well as antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The provision of suitable tools (WBE toolbox) has created the basis for supporting the ÖGD in a targeted and cost-efficient manner in preparing for new requirements in the fight against the pandemic, also with regard to the implementation of the EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD).
