On 8 and 9 September 2025, experts gathered at the Maternushaus in Cologne for the well-attended 23rd Cologne Sewer and Sewage Treatment Plant Colloquium (KKKK), where they discussed current practical issues. The focus was on climate protection and adaptation to climate change, as well as relevant topics relating to wastewater and sewage sludge management. Two presentations at the beginning of the event highlighted the current relevance of EU-KARL.
Our FiW colleagues gave a presentation on both days. On Monday, Sebastian Kerger reported on the 'ENTfrachtEN' research project, which focuses on monitoring and control options using ultrasonic sensors in combined sewer systems. The project aims to minimise water pollution by using freight-based control to manage water and sewer volumes. The required sensor technology and its location in the sewer system were examined in detail.
On the second day, Carl Fritsch discussed the potential of wastewater treatment plants with regard to energy and the bioeconomy. His presentation focused on options for carbon-based sector coupling, such as biomethan, CO₂ and methanol.
Overall, it was a thoroughly successful event, with plenty of opportunities for networking and stimulating discussions. Many thanks to the organisers.
