Review of the Doctoral Students’ Trip 2025

Inspiration for the doctorate and enriching moments as a team

At FiW, early-career researchers have the opportunity to pursue their doctorates in an interdisciplinary and practice-oriented research environment. The doctoral students work on current issues in water research – ranging from sustainable water and wastewater management to innovative technologies and questions of climate change and resource protection. In addition to professional supervision, great importance is placed on scientific exchange and personal development. Joint events such as the annual doctoral trip provide space to discuss research topics, broaden perspectives, and strengthen team spirit.

This year’s doctoral trip took place in mid-September with the ISA – Institute for Urban Water Management of RWTH Aachen University in Zeeland. FiW participants included Aleja Lenis, Mark Braun, Sebastian Kerger, Fabio Voit, and Peter Schleiffer.

The trip began with a visit to the Watersnoodmuseum in Ouwerkerk, where participants gained insights into the devastating storm surge of 1953 and learned how the Netherlands has consistently advanced its coastal protection since then. Particularly impressive were the Phoenix caissons, which were used at the time to close the dike breaches.

In the following days, the focus was entirely on our dissertation topics. In short pitches, lively discussions, and feedback sessions, the doctoral students presented their research projects, exchanged experiences, and gained valuable input for their future work.

Alongside professional exchange, there was also time for shared moments – such as walks on the beach or evenings spent together outdoors.

FiW sincerely thanks the organizing team as well as Thomas Wintgens for the excellent support and guidance during this trip.
