"Climate Change and Flood Risk Management in the Benelux Countries and Germany": FiW moderates international workshop for practitioners and researchers in Aachen

Around 70 international experts from Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany met at Forum M in Aachen on 18–19 February to discuss current practices in the use of climate change information by flood risk managers. FiW supported the event by providing overall moderation and facilitation in interactive break-out sessions.

The international workshop was organised by the JCAR ATRACE cooperation programme. This programme is dedicated to applied scientific research (Joint Cooperation programme on Applied scientific Research - JCAR) and is committed to improving cooperation in flood and drought management and research to accelerate transboundary regional adaptation to climate extremes (Accelerate Transboundary Regional Adaptation to Climate Extremes - ATRACE).

Members of the JCAR ATRACE cooperation programme include Delft University of Technology, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, the Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management (IWW) at RWTH Aachen University, Université de Liège, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the University of Twente, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology, the GFZ Helmholtz Centre Potsdam and Deltares.
The workshop was also supported by the Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of North Rhine-Westphalia (MUNV), the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, the German Hydrological Society and the Benelux Union.

During the two-day workshop, participants were first welcomed by Oliver Krischer, Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of North Rhine-Westphalia, who encouraged them to further intensify cross-border cooperation. The subsequent plenary presentations addressed current practices and needs in flood risk management as well as scientific approaches to solutions.

In interactive working groups, the experts worked together to identify which existing practices in the countries are particularly successful and which scientific findings need to be taken into account in the future. The first day of the event was rounded off with a joint dinner at the IWW premises.

As part of the workshop, FiW was involved in the overall moderation and the moderation of one of the four working groups. We would like to thank the organisers and, in particular, Deltares for the collaboration!
