In the midst of the first summer heat wave, the 5th Bergisch Climate Forum took place in Solingen on June 24, 2026. Representatives from local governments, academia, and the professional sector gathered to discuss current challenges and potential solutions for climate protection and climate adaptation in the Bergisch City Triangle which consists of the cities Remscheid, Solingen and Wuppertal. This year’s focus was on climate and health, digitalization, and the presentation of ongoing research projects. FiW was to present the ERDF-funded IndiKlimA research project, which aims to develop a standardized monitoring system for municipal and regional climate adaptation.

For the IndiKlimA consortium partners, the event also provided a valuable opportunity for in-person exchange in an informal and cordial atmosphere. At the Sparkassenforum Solingen, project participants gathered to network with representatives from the climate and environmental departments of the Bergisch City Triangle and with other research projects, and to discuss current developments in the areas of climate protection and climate adaptation.

Following welcoming remarks by the (vice-) mayors of Remscheid, Solingen, and Wuppertal, the program featured numerous presentations on practical applications and research with regards to climate change adaptation. In addition to projects on the circular economy in healthcare and the transformation of industrial parks, the three cities reported on current measures and challenges related to municipal implementation. In the afternoon, the research projects EKLIPS3plus1 and IndiKlimA were presented. On behalf of the FiW, Jana Vredenburg outlined the goals and content of the newly started project IndiKlimA. Since both projects collaborate closely with the municipalities of the Bergisch City Triangle, the Climate Forum provided an ideal platform to deepen existing contacts and to further expand synergies between the initiatives.

The Climate Forum impressively demonstrated the importance of the exchange between research, government, and the field of practical implementation for successful climate adaptation. The event provided an opportunity to bring together current projects and developments in the region, to learn from one another, and to generate new momentum for future collaboration. For the IndiKlimA project, the active participation was a good opportunity to place its own work within the regional context and further strengthen dialogue with relevant stakeholders.
